WASHINGTON – Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund co-trustees Don Evans and Alexis Herman today announced specific allocations that Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama will receive from the $40 million previously announced by Presidents Bush and Clinton. The amounts are $24.4 million for Louisiana, $12.4 million for Mississippi and $3.2 million for Alabama. “As we all know, the needs of the people in the Gulf region are great, so we need to move with all deliberate speed to get the money flowing to the states,” said Evans. “We look forward to working with the governors as we implement the specific awards.” “With so much work to do, everyone has a part to play including the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund. With this announcement we can now move forward with helping the states as they continue the process of recovery,” said Herman. The announcement comes just one month after Presidents Bush and Clinton announced $30 million in grants to Gulf region higher education institutions devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the intention to award $20 million in grants through a ministerial partnership with local and regional faith-based organizations, and the intention to disburse an initial $40 million divided amongst the three states for their recovery and relief funds. The specific awards are based on each state’s percentage of total approved Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) applications submitted by individuals, i.e. 61 percent Louisiana, 31 percent Mississippi and 8 percent Alabama. The allocations will be disbursed in stages to the three states over the coming months only after the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund receives and approves detailed plans for the governance and oversight of fund distribution within each state and the specifics for how the money will be used in each state. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and her immense devastation, former Presidents Bush and Clinton established the Bush-Clinton Katrina Funds to provide longer-term relief and rebuilding resources to help the victims of this disaster.
